Wayne County

Created in 1800 from parts of Pulaski and Cumberland counties, Wayne County was named for Anthony Wayne. Monticello became the county seat that same year. Its name honored Thomas Jefferson's home, with Micah Taul proposing the name and Joshua Jones surveying the town, according to Kentucky's historical marker program. That early planning established a civic center for the surrounding countryside long before Lake Cumberland became such a prominent part of the county's modern identity.

Use Monticello as a starting point for understanding Wayne County, then consider the wider Lake Cumberland setting. The courthouse community and the lake landscape offer two different ways to read the area: one through its early institutions, the other through its geography. A county visit works best with time for both. Check the relevant lake facility before choosing an access point or planning a day on the water.
