Hart County

Hart County was created in 1819 from portions of Hardin and Barren counties and named for Kentucky militia officer Nathaniel G. S. Hart. The Battle of Munfordville brought the Civil War to the county in 1862. A courthouse fire in 1928 destroyed some local records, an important detail for family-history research. A later chapter began with the Amish settlement near Munfordville in 1989, connecting the area with families who moved from Ohio.

Munfordville and Horse Cave provide two useful starting points for getting to know Hart County. One serves as the county seat, while the other is its largest city. Their different roles help explain why county life extends beyond a single center. The surrounding Amish community adds another local tradition, best approached with respect for residents’ privacy and the distinction between private homes and businesses that welcome visitors.
