Bullitt County
Salt resources around the Salt River and early travel routes helped shape the county’s development. Shepherdsville became an important local center, while later rail and interstate connections brought new industry and residents. Bourbon production at Clermont and the protected landscape at Bernheim now provide two very different ways to understand the county. The Bullitt County History Museum preserves regional records and stories. Looking at these places together reveals a community shaped by natural resources, transportation, craft, and changing settlement patterns.
Bullitt County gives families several ways to mix outdoor time with ordinary errands and an easy meal. Bernheim deserves a visit planned around trail lengths and walking ability; Kart Kountry provides a more energetic outing. Mount Washington and Shepherdsville parks support shorter neighborhood visits, and the public library adds year round programming. Distillery experiences are scheduled separately and have age rules. A well planned day keeps forest time, children’s activities, and adult bourbon interests as distinct options rather than treating them as interchangeable.
What Shapes Us
River Town Roots
Shepherdsville’s historic center and the Bullitt County History Museum introduce the county’s past, while local distilling traditions provide another distinctive strand of its story.
Forest and Enterprise
Bernheim’s forest and arboretum contrast with the interstate corridor, local commerce, and growing neighborhoods, giving the county both working landscapes and extensive outdoor appeal.
Shared Local Days
Public library programs, city parks, Kart Kountry outings, and neighborhood dining create a mix of family activities that can be planned around different ages and interests.

Your Bullitt County Questions
Practical answers for visits and everyday life
Know Before You Go
A Closer Look at Bullitt County
Find practical answers about local places, seasonal experiences, access, and planning a day around the county.
No. Bernheim Forest and Arboretum is a forest and arboretum where sculpture is part of a larger outdoor landscape. Plan for walking, weather, and the current admission policy. The giants are an attraction within the preserve rather than an amusement ride.
Yes, if you plan them as separate activities. James B Beam Distilling Co has reservation and age rules for bourbon experiences; Kart Kountry and Mount Washington City Park offer different family choices. Do not assume a tasting ticket includes suitable activities for children.
Bullitt County History Museum preserves local history and research materials in Shepherdsville. It is a useful quieter stop alongside a downtown meal. Confirm museum hours, particularly when visiting on a weekend or around public holidays.
Choose a route and destination within Bernheim Forest and Arboretum that match your group’s ability. The preserve is large, so a visit to the giants and a long woodland hike are different plans. Ask about current route conditions and access.
Kart Kountry offers go-karts and other family attractions. Check height, age, ride, and weather rules for the particular activity. Younger children may need a different option even when older members of the group want to race.
Shepherdsville works for county history and the I-65 corridor; Mount Washington offers a different community setting along US 31E. Bullitt County History Museum and Mount Washington City Park help anchor each side rather than treating the county as one interstate exit.
Availability varies. Choose a scheduled experience at James B Beam Distilling Co and confirm its booking and age requirements. A gift-shop stop, a restaurant visit, and a guided production tour can have different rules and operating times.
Consider Bullitt County History Museum, ordinary public recreation at Mount Washington City Park, or public programs at Bullitt County Public Library. Bernheim Forest and Arboretum has its own admission policy and should not be presented as automatically free. Paid activities and reserved park facilities are separate.
From the Ground Up Books, Busy Lady Quilt Shop, The Candle Barn Company give specific stores to browse. For clothing, consider Troutman’s Dry Goods, Country Vogue Boutique, Small Town Mama Boutique. These choices connect a visit to actual county businesses rather than sending every shopper to a regional mall outside the county.
Consider Cedar Grove Coffee House, Cattleman’s Roadhouse Shepherdsville, Amore Mio Italian Restaurant Mt Washington. Pick the meal around your forest, museum, or family-activity route, and use the actual restaurant menu to check options before bringing a large group.
Give Bernheim Forest and Arboretum its own block of outdoor time and reserve any James B Beam Distilling Co experience separately. Add one meal and leave driving time between stops. The county’s attractions are not all within a single walkable district.
